In November 2008, we were involved in a project that sought to help people with HIV/AIDS in some of the poorest communities in the capital of Uganda, Kampala. Our task was to develop a model community garden within a slum environment, which would teach local community members how to grow vegetables organically, so that they would have access to fresh, healthy food for themselves and their families. The model garden would also be used as a resource and teaching garden for any member to be able to develop their own gardening skills.
Two months later, harvesting in the model garden had started and clients can now take fresh vegetables to their homes and sell surplus produce in some of Kampala's markets. Forty more gardens have now been set up in people's own homes and communities!
